"Horse-for-the-Course" - Perry wins again at Crown Colony
Perry withstood a strong comeback attempt by Michael in the final round of the 2010 Fall Classic, and held on down the stretch to capture his second straight Fall Classic Title at Crown Colony. Perry joins “The Jap” and “Little Ray” as a member of the exclusive club of champion golfers with multiple Fall Classic titles.
Going into Sunday's final round, Perry held what seemed to be an insurmountable eight stroke lead over Michael; however, with a solid front nine by Michael and some possibly less than stellar play by Perry, the two were all even after only ten holes. At breakfast on Sunday, The Jap was telling Perry not to go into a prevent defense; however, Perry seemed to ignore the advice of the three-time champion by coming out to the blocks with a bogey, maxi-pad, double bogey start on his way to a front nine 47. Perry then continued his slide by starting out the back nine with a maxi-pad on #10; howerver, Perry responded like a champion by making pars on the 11th and 12th holes to retake the lead by four strokes, and Michael was never able to cut the lead to less than three for the rest of the day. Perry was very good over the first three rounds with scores of 85 (E), 82 (-3), and 84 (-1), before closing with a final round 90 (+5). Michael was very consistent over the four days of the tournament, turning in scores of 86 (E), 87 (+1), 89 (+3), and 87 (+1). Congratulations to Perry on his victory and to Michael for his best ever finish in the Fall Classic.
Scott and Pat also had strong showings, and finished in a tie for third. Scott lead the tournament at the end of the first day after firing an opening round 84 (-3), but was derailed by a poor second round. Scott played well on both Saturday and Sunday with a pair of 87's (E) to finish strong. Pat also had a good weekend with scores of 84 (-2) and 87 (+1).
"Bloody Saturday" - Red Team wins Captains' Cup again
On what may forever be known as "Bloody Saturday", the Red Team, lead by Captain Ray, made a complete sweep of Saturday's eight matches as the scoreboard ran red with the flags of Captain Ray's troops. The first two days of the competetion were very closely combated, but Saturday's huge victory allowed the Red Team to blow open the contest, and to coast to an easy victory on Sunday.
The Blue Team, lead by the "puppet regime" of Captain Sal (TD was working the mouth, “The Rat” was working the arms) took a small lead, 44-40, after Thursday's Best Ball matches. Two of the Thursday matches ended in a dead heat, and the other two were decided by the slimmest of margins. Following the first day, Captain Sal was overheard stating that the only thing that the Blue Team had to worry about was "over-confidence". It appears that Sal either didn't know what he was talking about or his team didn't listen to him (or possibly both), because that four point lead was as good as it was going to get for the Blue Team.
The Friday morning individual matches were very close, with the Red Team winning the session by a score of 82.5 - 77.5 to take a one point lead into the afternoon. Frank (Blue Team) and Perry (Red Team) each had dominate 8-2 singles victories, while Birk had a convincing 7.5–2.5 victory over “Syrupy”. Red Team partners “Big Ray” and “Syrupy” each put a 7-3 whipping on the Blue Captain. The Red Team’s late acquisition of Bubba, aka “The Factor”, also paid off as “The Factor” had a 6.5–3.5 victory in one of his singles matches.
The Friday afternoon 3/3/3 matches were even closer, as the Red Team scratched out a one point victory for the session to take a slim two point lead into the weekend. Barry and Sal had the biggest victory of the session with a 7.5-2.5 beat down of the Red Captain and “The Factor”. The Red Team was lead by the duo of “The Cuntzster” and “Lefty”, who easily won their match over TD and Frank, 7-3. The point total after two days of competition showed the Red Team with 143 points to the Blue Team's 141 points. Interesting to note is that the point total going into the weekend in 2009 was also 143-141.
And then came "Bloody Saturday". With the most dominant one day outing in the history of the Captains' Cup, the Red Team took a very tightly contested battle and turned it into a rout. The Red Team started the day with a slim two point lead, and by day's end had stretched it to an insurmountable 46 point margin. Every single 18 hole match of the day was won by the Red Team. The Blue Team's only bright spots were a single nine hole victory and a nine hole tie. All of the Red Team members excelled; however, they were lead by Perry who teamed with Big Ray to rout TD and Sal (16-5) in the morning matches, and with John to put a beat down on TD and Barry (12-7) in the afternoon. Pat and Scott also had a dominate victory in the morning matches, romping over team Birk by a score of 15-6.
Sunday's matches were a mere formality, as victory for the Red Team was all but assured. However, Captain Ray would not let the Red Team rest on its laurels, and the Red Team won the day and finished with a final margin of victory of 328.5-275.5. Scott lead the Red Team by posting victories on both the front and back nines over each of the Rat's. John had a big 8-2 front nine victory over Peyton, while Pat and Ray each posted 7.5-2.5 victories on the back nine. The Blue Team was lead by Barry and TD, who each had multiple victories on the day. Barry easily handled Ricky 7.5-2.5 on the front nine and took care of John on the back nine with a 6-4 victory. TD had a pair of 6.5-3.5 victories over Pat and Danny.
Scoring
Without Little Ray around to keep his stranglehold on the Gross scoring title, The Rat jumped in to claim the title with a four round total of 339 (+51). This is the highest total to ever win the Gross scoring title with the previous high being a 329 (+41) by Little Ray at the 2005 Fall Classic at Walden. The Rat narrowly edged out Perry who turned in a four round total of 341.
Crown Colony once again proved to be more than enough course for the Fall Classic participants. The winning score of +1 (net) was only the second winning score over par in tournament history, second only to +6 (net) at Walden in 2005. There were only 6 rounds under net par for the entire week. Scott's -3 on Thursday, Perry's -3 on Friday, and Barry's -3 on Sunday were the rounds of the tournament. Pat carded a -2 on Saturday's round, and Big Ray and Perry also turned -1 scores on Saturday.
Trash
Perry also dominated the Trash competition by winning six closest to the holes. TD won three closest to the hole trashes on the opening day, but couldn't scratch out another for the rest of the tournament. Danny and The Rat also had three closest to the holes for the week.
Without Little Ray around to dominate, the Long Drive competetion was wide open. Three different players won long drive trash for the week as John had two, and Pat and Peyton each had one.
Calcutta
Sal and Ricky each picked Perry in the Fall Classic Modified Calcutta. Therefore Perry won $100, while Sal and Ricky each won $50 each.
"The Factor" joins the The Fall Classic Food Committee
Bubba was not only a factor on the course, but also in the kitchen, as "The Factor" and TD dished up some great meals for the weekend. TD served up some delicious gumbo and salad on Thursday night. On Friday night Bubba grilled up some big steaks served with baked potatoes. A special thanks to both for all of the time and hard work that they put into it for the rest of us.
